Evangeline Pemberton needs help to get away from her abusive stepfather. She runs to her dead mother’s childhood friend. This friend is trying to marry her daughter off and that includes putting a well to do man in a compromising spot. The mother’s plans are to use Evangeline to help in her plot.
The group arrives at the tall, dark and brooding Gavin Lioncroft’s home for a house party his sister has set up. After accidently being the cause of his parent’s death, Gavin has had nothing to do with society for years. He is immediately attracted to Evangeline. She is torn between her interest in Gavin and her fear he is truly a killer. Evangeline has a special talent for reading others by just touching them. That is, everyone but Gavin.
When Gavin’s brother in law is killed, Gavin is the number one suspect. Evangeline is pushed into using her special skill to help Gavin prove he didn’t kill his sister’s husband. They grow closer as they work together and Evangeline starts to see that Gavin is really a man that has been badly maligned. Gavin finds that he enjoys getting to know his sister and her daughters. He has had no contact with his family since his parents died.
Despite being in love, Evangeline still plans to leave. Her stepfather would never allow her to leave. She has no doubt she is in love with Gavin when her stepfather shows up to take her home. Gavin physically drives the man away.
Gavin knows he loves Evangeline but can’t offer her the security she needs if he is going to hang for killing his brother in law. As people leave the house party, Evangeline discovers who the killer is and Gavin races off to catch the person. While he is gone, Evangeline’s stepfather returns and snatches her home. Gavin goes after her, offering her a life of love with him.
When Erica Ridley was a guest blogger with Petit Fours and Hot Tamales she discussed Too Wicked to Kiss, her debut novel. I thought it sounded interesting because I like Gothic novels. I love the dark, broodingly handsome, alpha male and the smart, sassy woman that tames him. This book fits the bill. I thought it was great and I look forward to reading more from Erica Ridley. That is the highest praise I can give a book or an author.
