By Tami Brothers Today is Halloween. Typically, Halloween is a time where people face some of their biggest fears. A few are able to conquer these fears, while others realize they never will. I’m all about facing my demons. Earlier this month, I stared down the belly of the beast and pulled the trigger on a project I’ve been contemplating all year. Maybe it’s because ASHES has been sitting on an agent’s desk without comment for the better part of two months, but everything is starting to parallel the writing process for me. Can’t get my dishwasher to work? Neither did my last hero. Husband recently set himself on fire? Yeah, well, who hasn’t envisioned torching an entire manuscript? Incapable selling my latest project horse? Well, that comparison isn’t much of a stretch. Except it kind of is because we’re talking about Lucero here. Or Lucifer as we are prone to calling him when his owner is out of earshot. Anyway, it’s [...]

Many times these memories are triggered by our senses: sight, smell, touch, hearing, etc. Cookies baking in the oven remind us of comforting days spent at Grandma’s house. A song on the radio can remind us of a wedding dance, a special time with friends, or a time period when life seemed simpler. While it’s never good to live in the past, I do think stepping back for occasional reflection is necessary. One [...]
